Statement about candidacy: My interest in running for a Town Council seat is really all about my missing the involvement I’ve enjoyed over the past 10-plus years in being a part of the town’s decision making processes. Last year, after serving nine years on the Scarborough Planning Board, several as vice chairman and chairman, I thought I’d enjoy the additional free time that would now be available.  To my surprise, I discovered that I really missed volunteering in this manner. Therefore, when the opportunity to consider running for a seat on the Town Council presented itself, I immediately saw a chance to satisfy my interest and I believe, those of the community, in continuing to serve the citizens of Scarborough in a new and challenging way. No single issue compels me to run for Town Council. I believe every issue is an important one. But a few specific one’s come immediately to mind: I believe it important to implement the Comprehensive plan as written; I believe one of the biggest issues facing Scarborough will continue to be managing growth effectively, mitigating traffic concerns and funding for the updating and modernization of our town and school facilities. I would characterize myself as a bit of a fiscal conservative. Believing firmly in that it is “not the town’s money, but rather the citizen’s”, and hence will approach each expenditure carefully, judiciously, and with respect to whose money it really is. It is my hope that we can explore new and innovative ways to help fund some of the larger and more expensive public improvement projects that we will be tasked with in the near future.
I prefer to not accept the convention that the majority of this burden must rest on the shoulders of the individual town property taxpayer. At the end of the day it really is all about continuing to make decisions that enhance and strengthen Scarborough as a place where one enjoys living and working. A sense of community, pride, and satisfaction. Before each vote, I believe each Town Councilor needs to ask themselves the question: “Does this measure improve and/or protect our citizens quality of life?” I believe I can contribute toward this end and respectfully ask the citizens of Scarborough for their support.
