Letter: Vote 'No' on No.1 (Printed Oct. 26, 2007)
Editor:
I encourage people to vote “No” on Ballot Question No. 1 on Nov. 6.
I sympathize with residents of Maine’s northern counties. It’s time for our state legislators to step-up and, finally, do something well considered and effective to improve economic development in northern Maine.
However, a gambling casino and horse racing track is neither well considered nor effective. An overwhelming percentage of funds, that gambling casino promoters claim will bring prosperity to the region, will not remain in Maine, let alone in northern communities.
Plus - casinos get a huge percentage of their income from people who can least afford to gamble with their assets. Gambling is, after all, a high risk endeavor. The probability of a happy ending is pathetically low.
And as for the residents of Scarborough – we will find our stated desire to keep gambling out of our town seriously compromised if another gambling casino is allowed in Maine. Once one finger is removed from the dyke, others are sure to soon follow.
Vote for careful answers to economic development in Maine. Vote “No” on Question No. 1
