Letter: Vote against park bond on ballot (Printed Oct. 26, 2007)

Editor:
On Nov. 6, Scarborough residents will vote on a general obligation bond totaling $1.2 million to build what proponents fraudulently call a “community park.”
Let’s be clear. This project is a $1.2 million athletic field. The $1.2 million will provide two-baseball diamonds and a third field for soccer and football. Supporters are quick to point out that beneficiaries are little leaguers, football and soccer teams, and incredulously, senior citizens.
If voters approve funding for projects like this, few senior citizens will be able to afford to live in Scarborough, forcing many to return to work to pay ever-increasing property taxes, leaving little or no time to enjoy a walk on, for example, Ferry Beach, a real community park.
Little leaguers, football and soccer players have two options: use the fields currently provided by taxpayers, or they (or their parents) can raise $1.2 million through private donations, as was done recently in Cape Elizabeth, to construct an artificial turf field.
Today Scarborough taxpayers are obligated to repay general obligation bonds totaling $70.6 million. To disregard fiscal responsibility-not to mention common sense-by adding $1.2 million to this staggering total to pay for athletic fields that only benefit a small but vocal minority is outrageous.
As a Scarborough property taxpayer and resident, on Nov. 6, I will vote against adding $1.2 million to our town’s debt, and urge other property taxpayer’s fed-up with unnecessary municipal taxing and spending to do the same.
