A hobby to help others (Printed Oct. 19, 2007)
After school on Monday a group of Scarborough girls
and boys gathered at the home of Sage Hicks-Fredenburg, 9 (almost 10),
as they have for the past three weeks making crafts such as pot holders
and Perler Bead refrigerator magnets. It’s the kind of activity kids
often start enthusiastically but soon lose interest in when faced with
the limitless other enticements competing for their attention. But what
sustains this group’s attention in their hobby isn’t so much making the
crafts as what they do with them once they are done. “I saw a TV show
and saw children who didn’t really have a lot of food and I wanted to
make it better for them,” Sage said. The show was an appeal for
donations to the charity “Feed the Children,” which promises that a $20
donation can provide up to 1,000 meals for needy children in the
poorest corners of the earth. In order to raise the money, Sage and her
friends have been making the crafts which they give away in return for
a donation that they send on to the charity. The crafts are available
at First Stop convenience story located at 85 County Road in western
Scarborough. Those interested in contributing to this cause dreamed up
“by kids, for kids,” are invited to leave a donation in the amount of
their choosing and walk away with the handmade craft of their choice.
The effort is already paying off as the group has already made its
first $20 donation and is now focused on raising $500 by Christmas that
will be used to buy shoes for the impoverished children. By Kids,
