Special to the Leader

I am willing to bet that the seniors who attended Senior Series programs at Hillcrest Community Center are among the best bakers in the state. On May 2 I had the pleasure of attending a bake sale put on as part of the programming for the day. Their culinary arts and talents were beautifully displayed and sold fast! The speaker of the day was Cecelia Duchano, senior coordinator for Scarborough Community Services. She spoke of changes Scarborough Community Services will be planning in the future for senior programming in our town. Then believe it or not after munching on all those goodies we were served a great lunch of mini Italians, a great tasting minestrone soup, a pastry try and coffee. Like I have said many times, those guys at Senior Series know how to do it!
In order to keep on delivering these fine programs this senior group, Senior Series, held its monthly meeting on May 9. I understand that just as great programming is in the works, for example I saw a poster advertising a pot luck where people will bring their recipes and listen to a speaker, which was held May 16. Remembering their bake sale I skipped my breakfast on May 16, my wife made one of her fine dishes and we attended the potluck, again at Hillcrest community center. The verity of dishes were numerous, there was something there for every taste
and plenty of it. The speaker of the day was Mr. Larry Gross from the Southern Maine Agency on Aging he spoke on the many programs and aid the agency offers. He also presented a very informative DVD. To finish the program a dessert was served with coffee and tea from Al’s Catering.
With the month of May being Older Americans Month and with Southern Maine Agency on Aging putting on their annual senior expo titled Active Aging Expo held at the Sports Dome on Warren Avenue Senior Series for the first time decided to participate and have a table. Like everything this group of seniors does, they put their heart and souls into it. As a result, from all that I could see and from the reports I received it was a grand looking venue, it had a continually running DVD of all Senior Series activities to date, many informative handouts, Senior Series phone pads with logos and free candy and water donated by many generous Scarborough merchants. The day was a great success, the town of Scarborough certainly can be proud of their representation on Older American’s Month and at the Expo.
Now with a lot of that real heavy work and lots of long planning behind them I guess Senior Series decided to lighten things up a bit because I got word that there was going to be “Twisted Trivia” played at Hillcrest on May 30 (Boy these guys don’t stop). I didn’t want to miss out on the fun but for reasons out of my control, I did, but my wife went so I got a good report on the happenings.
The master or ceremonies a Mr. Brad Taylor, Pastor of Mount Hope Community Church set up Hillcrest to look just like a real TV set with flashing lights, bells, buzzers and podiums for the contestants and when the time came and the game began I was told the questions came fast as did the laughter and fun (It’s so good to hear people laugh). I understand there was a good supply of finger sandwiches, pasta salad and pastry trays with coffee.
Our bingo on Fridays is growing, come have a go at it; I hear some one makes a new friend every Friday. I hear through the grapevine there is a lot going on this month with Senior Series check it out in the Leader and come have some fun. “REMEMBER THERE IS NOT MUCH YOU CAN DO ABOUT THE WIND BUT YOU CAN RESET YOUR SAILS.
