Senior Series - By Bill Billings
Hi: all my fellow seniors, it was so nice to
see all enjoying that artistic streak we all have, although some not
knowing it until on March 7. SPIRAL Arts came to visit at Hillcrest
Community Center and with their super talents in the arts and knowing
how to make it fun, showed us all that only our imaginations were our
limits.
We were supplied with unlimited material and our guest artist had unlimited patience. I think we all left that day feeling pretty good about ourselves after having a delicious lunch, good fellowship and with some nice artwork under our arms.
On March 14 Senior Series had no senior activities but the board did meet as we usually do on each second Wednesday to plan more activities. The show must go on.
Senior Series on March 21, though a bit late, had a great St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. A chance to repeat the wearing of the green still brought out a full house. Some of these wearers of the green were new faces. That big chubby Leprechaun with a big green hat, and with help from our friendly board members made them feel very welcome. I was suspicious that there was also more added to making this great day - it had to be that great music and vocals of Phil Huff at the keyboards and I do mean KEYBOARDS!!
One piled on top of the other, Phil could play those boards like he was a part of them. What would a St. Patrick’s Day celebration be with out corn beef and cabbage? Well, Senior Series, not one to break a tradition, served a wonderful corn beef and cabbage dinner; served buffet style by Al’s of Scarborough. Not a senior went away disappointed or hungry.
Then some lucky seniors went home smiling even wider with a very nice door prize. On each table were fresh cut floral arrangements donated by Maine Floral Creations of Scarborough. Not known to our guests, each senior, when they picked a plate for their Irish dinner might have chosen a marked plate. If the luck of the Irish was with them they took home a floral arrangement.
On March 28 a group of amateur thespians who came from the far corners of Scarborough, consisting of Senior Series board members put on a play after rehearsing for many hours. This is a new strain of entertainment, which had lots of fun for the actors and the audience, though hard to tell who had the greater share.
The play title was “In the Beginning,” written by Bruce Kane. The setting was is in a place called The Garden of Eden Bar & Grill. Their specialty is an APPLE MARTINI. Are you getting the picture? The actors were Carole Wakem, an exercise suggested to the audiences Nancy Libby, instructions to the audiences, Grant Worthing as Adam, Sharon Theofrastou as Eve, Bill Billings as The Serpent; The Director of the play was Jane Everett.
It is hard to say who really had the most fun, like with most small road shows, the actors do all the work and I know these amateur thespians (board members) joined together and shared the work. They helped arrange the house, made all the sets, did the lighting, came up with the props and did their own costumes and rehearsed their lines, and then our director had to pull it all together. Great job Jane, you deserved those flowers.
After Carole saw that the audience was instructed in good PT and Nancy saw that the audience was going to behave and Grant as Adam interned the bar and the serpent Bill exchange a few words and Sharon as EVE is served an apple martini by that slippery serpent the plot began to unfold with quick one liners bringing laughter just as fast.
After Eve gives Adam a few sips of her apple martini and Adam gains knowledge, the one-liners quicken and the rest is history, or THE BEGINNING. Judging by the applause and laughter during and after the play and the very positive comments, I think it was a success. Lunch was a buffet style; build your own sandwich, with all kinds of choices and many desserts as well as a large fruit tray with coffee and drinks. Just right for Senior Series’ first dinner theater.
