Shogun robbed, alleged thief leads police on chase

A man was quickly caught by Scarborough police after allegedly robbing a local restaurant and taking off with two cash registers in tow.
Last Sunday (March 4) at 3:09 a.m., the Scarborough Police Department received a call from a resident saying the Shogun Japanese Steak House, located on Gorham Road near the intersection with Payne Road, had been broken into.
The burglary had occurred after the restaurant was closed for the night. An employee who lived above the business discovered that the restaurant had been burglarized and called police.
The employee told police that he had seen a man in a minivan leaving the scene and saw him driving down Payne Road toward South Portland. A Scarborough police officer spotted the minivan on Route One in Scarborough and began following the vehicle and trying to make the driver pull over. The driver attempted to elude police and, after a brief chase down Route One in Scarborough, the vehicle slid into a snow bank, hit a guardrail and came to a rest in the oncoming lane. Police surrounded the vehicle and took the man, 42-year old Reginald White, into custody. White had no fixed address at the time of the crime.
Police found two cash registers in the vehicle, with approximately $100 in cash found in each.
The vehicle White was driving had been stolen earlier in the night from Old Orchard Beach.
White was charged with burglary, theft, operating after suspension, possession of burglary tools, possession of prescription drugs, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and eluding a police officer. He also had warrants issued for his arrest on charges of burglary, theft and criminal mischief.
White was held at the Cumberland County Jail for $7,500 bail. He also was arraigned in county court this week.
