Mother Nature has finally decided to cooperate and Winterfest 2007, sponsored by Scarborough Community Services, will take place on Sunday, Feb. 18 from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Oak Hill athletic complex.
The annual free event will kick off with the lighting of a bonfire and then participants, grouped by grades (K-2, 3-5,6-8), can take their pick of winter activities.
This year’s Winterfest activities will include a snow people building contest, a visit with Frosty, snow volleyball, turkey bowling, cardboard sled races and skating with Crackers, the Portland Pirates mascot. Participants can also join the running for king and queen of Winterfest by competing in speed skating, backward skating, slalom skating or an obstacle course. The winners will be awarded points that will be used to determine the rulers of Winterfest. Lunch, s’mores, and hot chocolate will also be available.
Valerie Jacob, a coordinator for the event, said “We welcome the public to attend and there will be something for everybody” to enjoy. She added, “The ice is in excellent condition and the maintenance crew has been working around the clock to get it ready.”
Winterfest will also offer an ice cube hunt, a new event for pre-k to second grade children, in which participants will search for ice cubes with prizes frozen inside.
For more information, call the Scarborough Community Services at 730-4150 and to see a schedule of the day’s events, visit www.scarborough.me.us. Those interested can also get the latest information from the ice rink hot line at 730-4198, ext. 6221 or by listening to local radio stations. In case of inclement weather, the make-up date for the event will be Monday, Feb. 19.
