Thoughts on resolutions
I never have understood New Year’s resolutions.
Can’t any day be ideal for making a change or starting something new?
Maybe it is because New Year’s Day is such a definitive starting point – it offers a clean slate because a whole year awaits, complete with infinite possibilities.
But, each day, each hour, heck, each minute can be considered a clean slate.
When a new year comes, it gives us a chance to reminisce and take a hard look at ourselves. Although we are a culture that is built on perfection and constantly improving ourselves all year, New Year’s Day is ground zero for making resolutions.
There are some resolutions that are common – wanting to lose weight, having a desire to stay in touch with friends and family, quitting smoking. Those are good goals to have – but do you need to have the beginning of a new year to make those goals?
This week’s Street Talk question asked people what their New Year’s resolution is. The responses have a common thread – they all do not have to start when the New Year begins, because they can start any day, any time of the year. One person even said that they make of point of not coming up with resolutions, because they are liable to be broken. While that may be true, every day, not just the New Year, is an opportunity to take those broken promises and goals and try to make them stick.
