The state’s only facility equipped to treat animals with neurological problems is planning a move to Scarborough.
The Scarborough Planning Board will be asked to give site plan approval to the Animal Neurological Clinic for its proposed 13,960 square foot facility in Enterprise Business Park in Scarborough in the coming weeks.
The clinic is currently located on Warren Avenue in Portland.
According to co-owner Alan Potthoff, the facility, which is the only one of its kind in Maine, receives referrals from veterinarians from all of New England. Animals that are treated there have a range of conditions, including seizure problems, pain that cannot be defined as “orthopedic”, paralysis, brain tumors and ruptured disks in the animal’s spine.
Potthoff said the clinic, which has been in existence since 1988, is in need of more space and a more efficient site. He said the Enterprise Business Park was chosen for a number of reasons, the major one being its access to the Maine Turnpike.
The facility includes an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine and a CT (computed tomography) scanner specifically designed for animals. The MRI machine is a tool used for creating images of the brain and spinal tissue. Uses for the MRI include identification of tumors, abscesses and hemorrhages. The CT scanner creates images of the brain, nasal cavity, middle ear, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, joints and other organs. CT imaging is effective in diagnosing brain tumors, spinal cord lesions and diseases of the middle ear or nasal cavity.
The Animal Neurological Clinic staff includes two veterinarians who specialize in neurology, several veterinary technicians and a veterinary technician assistant.
The search for land for a new Animal Neurological Clinic has been going on for several years, according to Potthoff. He said the new facility will begin construction as soon as a final budget is compiled.
