This Week's Editorial – By Lucas Knowles

Doing their jobs

This week’s interview with Dean Wellman puts a local spin on a national and international debate – the presence of the United States in Iraq.
U.S. troops have now been in Iraq for three-and-a-half years. Ever since Americans were deployed to Iraq, questions about policy and motive have been asked.
Even with our current saturation of media sources, the only way to truly receive the story on what is occurring in Iraq is from the men and women who have served there. Wellman gives us a view of what he saw as a soldier in Iraq and that helps to paint a true picture.
Wellman said it is healthy that the country is having a debate on the presence of the United States in Iraq. Many would agree with his view – this country was founded on the right to free speech and freedom of ideas.
Even with the debate that continues to rage on in this country about the policy in Iraq, soldiers continue to carry out their orders and do their job – that is something that should not be forgotten. Soldiers do not shape the country’s military policy, they perform their jobs to the best of their abilities. Whatever your feelings are about the situation in Iraq, that should be kept in mind.
Dean Wellman’s story is not unique – he went overseas to defend his country. But he and his fellow soldiers should not get lost in all of the rhetoric.
